Our Story

Founded on a starlit night in 1954 on the garden terrace of Evergreen House by a group of notable book enthusiasts, including founding officers Dorothy Miner and Elizabeth Baer, The Baltimore Bibliophiles has been for decades a place for education and fellowship among those who love the written word. From early meetings including a talk about the Nuremberg Chronicle with all Baltimore-based copies in attendance or an update on the recently discovered Dead Sea Scrolls by Dr. William Albright to more recent online presentations from scholars and collectors across the country, The Bibs, as members call the group, are committed to education and fellowship. The Baltimore Bibliophiles are currently celebrating 70 years while looking forward to the next 70 years and future generations of collectors and members.

About this Website

  • The center collage on the main page celebrates the history and culture of books - combining printers marks, architectural detail from the Congressional and Peabody Libraries, and the personal library of late Bibs member Richard Macksey - framed in the black and gold checker-pattern of Baltimore.
  • The Baltimore: The City that Reads bench photograph is courtesy photographer Mike Allegra - mikeallegra.com.
